With Loreto's neighboring islands, there
are many white sand beaches and coves waiting to be explored.
Fishing, kayaking, diving, snorkeling, boating, and whale
watching are some of the great activities Loreto has to offer.
On Loreto's picturesque beachfronts try a horseback outing
or explore the high mountain desert on a mule ride following
the old traditional trails to remote ranches. Visit Primer
Agua, just south of Loreto on a desert road and embark on
a hike, a mountain bike trek or just relax under the palms
in this old Indian oasis. Mission San Javier is also a destination
for many of Loreto's visitors. Known as one of the most beautiful
and preserved Spanish missions, the gravel road will take
you through lush mountain canyons where the view of the Sea
of Cortez is breathtaking. The 23 mile drive on a narrow,
mountain road can be rough, but well worth the trip! Just
north of Loreto , the beautiful quaint town of Mulege is a
great day trip. Arrange a guided trip to the cave paintings
and petroglyphs in nearby Guadalupe Mountains and visit the
town's hilltop mission. The drive along spectacular Bahia
Concepcion from Loreto to Mulege has numerous turnouts to
beautiful white sand beaches.
The town of Loreto is easily explored on foot. The historic
mission and museum are located in the town's plaza area. The
museum has a excellent collection of religious and historic
artifacts that date back to the early colonial days. Wander
the cobblestone streets and visit the "curios" shops
and treat yourself to a scrumptious plate of local seafood
and a cold "cerveza" in one of the numerous open
air restaurants. Sukasa is located 3 blocks from the plaza.
Stroll Loreto's mile long waterfront walk way or "malecon"
and enjoy a a gentle sea breeze while taking in the spectacular
view of Carmen Island.
